Setting up a qMail mailing list

by chris — last modified June 13, 2007 08:53

This describes how to set up the mailing lists and reconfigure them for your needs. The Maintenance Panels are covered first, and then the Modify List screen is covered. This documentation was originally written for NC SOPHE.

The Mailing List Panels

These panels allow you to modify different parts of your mailing list that you may need to change on a regular basis, such as adding subscribers, removing moderators, etc.

This is the main panel for maintaining your list.  The name of the list is on the left. To delete this list, click Delete.  To modify it (see below), click Modify.

Click the red buttons to gain access to panels of functions.

Click on the red Show Subscribers button to view the subscribers of your mailing list.  A subscriber can be deleted on this panel by clicking on the trash can icon.

On the main panel, click on the red Add Subscriber button to add a new subscriber by entering their email address.  You can remove a subscriber by clicking on the Delete Subscriber button and selecting which subscriber to remove.

qmail2

You may need to add or remove a moderator for the list.  Click on the Show Moderator button on the main panel to display the moderator(s) of the list.  Moderators can be added by clicking on the red Add Moderator button on the mail panel.

Moderators can be deleted from the List Moderators panel, or the Delete Moderator panel can be used.

The Digest function allows many emails posted over a period of time to be viewed in a single email.  Select the List Digest Subscribers to view who receives the digest.   Digest subscribers can be deleted on this panel.

Digest subscribers can be added through the Add Digest Subscriber panel, or be removed by the Delete Digest Subscriber panel, accessed from the main panel.

The Modify List screen

This is the screen used to modify the tools of your mailing list.  Most of this screen will be set up correctly be default for most needs.  This is accessed through the main panel.

The list owner is the email address that sends out the mailing list.  This is not usually an address that is going to be replied to.

Add the text that will appear in the email subject line.

qmail6

This determines who posts to the list.  Usually the moderator approves all the posted messages before they are sent to the list.  In the above example, subscribers that are approved can post messages.

qmail7

The replies to a posted message should go to an email address that is used to correspond with members or subscribers.

qmail8

A trailer giving the recipient list information is included in the mail out.  A digest version can be created for those subscribers who sign up for the list in digest form. Subscribe/unsubscribe links are given and are standard.  These are usually checked.

qmail9

This allows remote access to the list.  The list admin can be accessed from any computer that is online.  The list should be private where only those with permission have access.

This provides admin functionality through remote access.

Subscriber confirmation is provided by an email being sent to the email address given in subscription requests.  Approval is also required by a moderator.  Verification is determined upon receipt of email to subscription request.  This prevents someone from signing up someone who is not requesting subscription.

An archive of the list is created and is usually only accessed by moderators.  ezmlm-cgi applies to MySQL settings.

MySQL does not apply to NC SOPHE.
